Mental Health Resources

Did you know? You typically don’t need a referral from your doctor to see a therapist/counselor, but you may need a referral to see a psychiatrist. If you have any questions or concerns about mental health, we encourage you to reach out and schedule an appointment with your child's primary care provider.

A therapist/counselor is a licensed counselor (licensed mental health counselor, clinical social worker, marriage and family therapist, etc.) who can diagnose and provide various types of talk therapy for mental health and substance abuse conditions. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose and provide various treatments such as prescribing medications and talk therapy for mental health and substance abuse conditions.

Looking for a mental health provider?

  • Psychology Today - A directory that lists clinical professionals, psychiatrists, and treatment centers providing mental health services. You can sort by location, insurance, age-range, and more.
  • Washington's Mental Health Referral Service for Children and Teens - A phone and online request service, operated by Seattle Children's Hospital, to help connect families with mental health providers in your community who accept new patients, work with your insurance, and fit your child's treatment needs. This service is accessible for children and teens 17 and under living in WA state.

Mental health providers for those with private/commercial insurance (such as Regence, Premera, Tricare, Kaiser, etc.):

  • Review the resources above, and or/call your child’s insurance provider directly (using the number on the back of your insurance card) to find additional mental health providers.
