Did you know? You typically don’t need a referral from your doctor to see a therapist/counselor, but you may need a referral to see a psychiatrist. If you have any questions or concerns about mental health, we encourage you to reach out and schedule an appointment with your child's primary care provider.
A therapist/counselor is a licensed counselor (licensed mental health counselor, clinical social worker, marriage and family therapist, etc.) who can diagnose and provide various types of talk therapy for mental health and substance abuse conditions. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose and provide various treatments such as prescribing medications and talk therapy for mental health and substance abuse conditions.
